Suzhou New District-headquartered Canadian Solar Inc leads its other Chinese counterparts in the number of patents, according to a new list of Top 500 Chinese Companies in Patents.

Canadian Solar took the 240th place and occupied the first slot among Chinese solar energy companies when the list was recently released at the 2019 China Marketing International Conference held in Guangzhou, Guangdong province.

As of June, the Suzhou company owned 2,248 patents around the world, of which 2,138 were Chinese patents and 23 were Patent Cooperation Treaty international patents.

Company officials said their newly-developed polycrystalline solar cells had set a new record for large-sized polycrystalline cells, whose conversion efficiency of light to electricity reaches 22.28 percent. They said the result was recognized by the Franhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems, the largest institute for applied solar energy research in Europe, in April this year.

Founded in 2001 in Ontario, Canada, Canadian Solar operates as a global energy provider with subsidiaries in 19 countries on six continents. Canadian Solar is both a leading global manufacturer of solar PV modules and a provider of solar energy solutions, with over 13,000 employees globally.

With its state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities in Canada, China, Brazil and Southeast Asian countries, company officials said that Canadian Solar has delivered more than 33 GW of premium quality solar modules to customers in more than 150 countries over the past 18 years.
