Suzhou New District hosts China biomedical annual conference

The 2019 China Biomedical Engineering Joint Annual Conference was held in Suzhou New District, East China's Jiangsu province, on Sept 28, according to local media reports.

This year's topic is "Healthy China: opportunities and challenges for biomedical engineering". The conference is aimed to serve as a platform for mutual learning through a combination of production, teaching and research.

More than 120 renowned experts, scholars and entrepreneurs from home and abroad attended the annual academic conference to explore the latest topics in biomedical engineering, recent academic achievements, industrial prospects and talent cultivation.

Experts from Southeast University, Tsinghua University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Chinese Society of Biomedical Engineering gave academic reports about biomedical engineering, manufacturing and measurement of organ-on-a-chip, and artificial intelligence in medicine.

Professors from Columbia University, State University of New York, and Kobe University also shared their ideas on the teaching practices and research direction of biomedical engineering around the world.

As the organizer of the conference, the Suzhou Medical Device Research Institute of Southeast University was established by Southeast University, Suzhou New District and the Jiangsu Industrial Technology Research Institute.

Based on the high quality resources of Suzhou New District in economy and industry as well as preferential policies, the research institute will take the advantages of Southeast University's strength in scientific innovation, talent cultivation and international cooperation to grow into a platform integrating scientific achievement commercialization, high-profile professional cultivation and industrial clustering.

Medical device and bioengineering and pharmaceutical industry is a key industry in Suzhou New District.

Currently, Suzhou New District is home to roughly 300 biological medicine and medical device companies which have an annual growth rate of 20 percent in output value, over 1,000 patents, and more than 10,000 employees.

In addition, there are currently nine other innovation platforms in Suzhou New District, including the Southeast University-University of Birmingham Biomedical Engineering Research Center.
