Construction of the Suzhou Campus of Nanjing University, one of the oldest and most prestigious higher learning institutions in China, started in Suzhou New District (SND) Sept 8, local media reported.
The ceremony also saw the unveiling of the university's industrial technology and research institute, an education and training base for future leaders, and an innovation and entrepreneurship center for global alumni.
Several cooperative projects integrating the government, industries, the university and research institutions were signed, such as the Suzhou high-quality educational development and innovation demonstration zone, SND's social undertakings, and the China (Suzhou) speech innovation valley.
With a designed space of 1 million square meters, the Suzhou campus is to tightly follow the plan of showing off its distinctiveness, becoming a talent hub, sharpening cutting-edge research advantages, and carving out innovative and novel development patterns.
That means the school will focus on the five academic areas of chemistry, biology and medicine, materials and energy, electronic information technology, the earth and environment, and humanities and social sciences.
It will also highlight interdisciplinary fusion by forming a faculty of over 1,000 experienced teachers and enrolling 12,000 undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral students. The number will rise to 20,000 in the long run.
