Suzhou New District (SND) was recently ranked as a national green industry demonstration base, according to an announcement made by the National Development and Reform Commission and the Ministry of Science and Technology.
SND has been dedicated to environmentally-friendly development since its establishment in 1990. While it composes 2.5 percent of Suzhou's entire land area and has 4 percent of the city's population, it has contributed to over 8 percent of Suzhou's total GDP.
The district has been focusing on green industries, forming an industrial system that has solar photovoltaic, new energy vehicles, and green home appliances as the pillar industries.
SND has consistently emphasized green innovation and has brought in domestically-renowned institutes like the Suzhou Research Institute for Environmental Innovation of Tsinghua University and the State Grid (Suzhou) City and Energy Research Institute.Together, they have incubated innovative start-up companies in green industries, as well as boosted the development of leading enterprises and plants.
The district has also signed a strategic cooperative agreement with Shanghai Science and Technology Exchange Center to share academic reflections and hold international forums.
It is actively seeking innovative cooperation in green industries with Japanese enterprises, with the aim of becoming a leader in the field.
SND has been gearing up to commercialize research findings and spur economic circulation. It has established five demonstration projects on the comprehensive utilization of resources, brought in six provincial-level and 58 city-level pilot companies for economic circulation, as well as was ranked as one the first national green manufacturing demonstration parks in China.
The district will continue its green development and aims to bolster its international image as green, low-carbon, intelligent, and high-end.
